Recently, the inaugural group of 32 participants graduated from the ‘Safely Engaging with Water Program’ at Cardinia Life, marking a significant step toward making swimming accessible and culturally inclusive. Designed specifically for culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities, this innovative program offers subsidised swim lessons, allowing participants to contribute just $100 for a comprehensive 10-lesson course.
According to Royal Life Saving Australia, nearly one in four drowning incidents each year involves individuals born overseas, highlighting the urgent need for inclusive water safety education. “Learning to swim goes beyond safety alone; it can also become a source of fitness, relaxation, and family fun,” explains Harpreet Singh Kandra, Senior Lecturer at Federation University and community advocate with Gurdwara Officer. “Unfortunately, most adults from multicultural backgrounds arrive in Australia without swimming skills. With over 80% in these communities unable to swim, the risks, especially given Australia’s dynamic water conditions, are immense.”
Despite swimming being a vital part of Australian culture, many adult migrants miss out on essential lessons, often due to gaps in educational resources and orientation programs for international students.
The ‘Safely Engaging with Water Program’ was born out of the recognition of these challenges. Launched in July, this pilot initiative aims not only to reduce drowning statistics but also to foster a love for swimming that transcends barriers. By providing tailored lessons in a supportive environment, the program encourages participants to embrace swimming as a lifelong skill.
Following the successful launch, round 2 of the program is currently underway at Cardinia Life, with high demand already leading to a waiting list for future lessons. The positive response from the community illustrates the program’s significance and the vital role it plays in enhancing water safety and enjoyment for CALD communities.
Cardinia Leisure is committed to continuing this partnership with Harpreet Kandra to expand swim lesson opportunities for multicultural communities at Cardinia Life.
As the ‘Safely Engaging with Water Program’ continues to grow, it stands as a testament to the importance of inclusivity in water safety education. With ongoing support and engagement, more individuals will have the chance to safely enjoy Australia’s beautiful waters, transforming potential risks into opportunities for fitness and family bonding.
