Steph can & you can too!

Steph has been lifeguarding here at Cardinia Life and across Cardinia Shire’s seasonal outdoor pools for the past 4 years, and she is also studying to become a personal trainer. When she heard about the #HeCanSoWeCanToo campaign, Steph couldn’t wait to be involved, as this topic has always been close to her heart.

Growing up as the oldest sister of 3 brothers, Steph has always been very sporty and into activities that would have previously been considered “only for the boys”. When she isn’t here lifeguarding, she plays basketball once a week. She also loves to rock climb indoors & outdoors, longboarding, and snowboarding. She finds her sports relaxing.

When she went to high school there was no girls’ soccer team, but that didn’t stop her – she joined the boys team instead! She loved being able to keep up with the boys. Steph says earnt the respect of her coaches and teammates by working hard and showing them her skills.

Steph also works as an outdoor educator at 3 different camps, where she works with clients on outdoor activities such as high ropes, canoeing, bushwalking, mountain biking, rock climbing, abseiling and caving. When she started in the field, it was quite a male dominated area to work in, but over time she has seen a shift in the amount of women getting involved in outdoor education. She says that females are in demand from outdoor education companies which is great to see.

We asked Steph what she would say to someone who was considering getting into a male dominated field, or trying a different sport with more boys than girls. “I’d say go for it. If you are hesitant about something you have to choose whether to take an opportunity that may actually be something that helps you grow as a person, or limit yourself based on what society says is acceptable. You have the power to shake up the social norms and turn a few heads doing it, so you do you!”

Steph is also getting married in April 2020, has an amazing fiancé who has been nothing but supportive of all her passions. He proposed on their 5 year wedding anniversary at the place they had their first date – Timezone! Good luck for the upcoming wedding Steph!
