International Women’s Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.

The world has witnessed a significant change and attitudinal shift in both women’s and society’s thoughts about women’s equality and emancipation. Over recent years great improvements have been made, and you could think that women have gained true equality. The unfortunate fact is that this is not the case. Women’s education, health and the violence against them continues to be worse than that of men. Violence against women affects women’s well-being and prevents them from fully participating in society. It also impacts on families, the community and the nation. White Ribbon’s vision to ‘have a nation that respects women, in which every woman lives in safety, free from all forms of men’s abuse’ assists in bridging these inequalities by promoting gender equality and healthy relationships.

So make a difference, think globally and act locally!
Do your bit to ensure that the future for girls is bright, equal, safe and rewarding.
